Marine Science Resources

The Office of Marine Programs has developed many educational websites and is able to provide educators with resources to complement their marine and environmental science curricula.

Discovery of Sound in the Sea (DOSITS) - Explore the science of underwater acoustics. Find out how marine animals and humans use sound to sense their surroundings and to communicate. Hear sounds that fill the oceans. Meet scientists and investigate their tools and their exciting undersea research.

Discovery of Estuarine Environments (DOEE) - Explore estuaries and their biological communities, water properties, and environmental issues. Take a dive into Narragansett Bay or view an extensive slide show of the Bay's fish and invertebrates. This multidisciplinary site contains information on estuaries of the world, as well as teacher resources, maps, photos, and descriptions of estuarine organisms.

Discovery of Coastal Environments (DOCE) - Take virtual field trips and discover the physical characteristics and biota of four Rhode Island coastal ecosystems--Rocky Shore, Salt Pond, Salt Marsh, and Barrier Beach. This educational site contains biota galleries, maps, classroom activities, and additional resources.

Investigating Marine Life - Learn how Census of Marine Life (CoML) scientists conduct their research and employ technology as they sample a wide variety of ocean habitats, from coastal regions to the deepest regions of the world's oceans.

Education Resource Center - The Education Resource Center serves teachers as a reference library for accessing a variety of educational materials where they can preview CD-ROMS, videos, professional journals, books, magazines, and classroom curriculum materials.

Coastal Institute Visitor Center - Bring your friends and family to the Coastal Institute Visitor Center and see Living on the Edge, an interactive science exhibit comprised of videos, computer activities, a stream table, and dune machine - suitable for adults and children of all ages. Also visit the Coastal Institute Bookstore for a unique selection of marine-oriented books and field guides, educational games and toys, gifts and jewelry, and Graduate School of Oceanography clothing.

Down Where the Water Is - An updated edition of Down Where the Water Is: A Coastal Awareness Activity Book and associated comprehensive Teacher's Guide has been produced by URI's Office of Marine Programs. Designed for use in grades K-3, the Activity Book and Teacher's Guide are available free from the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council. Books can also be downloaded as PDF files.
