Annual Workshop for Jourrnalists
Annual Workshop is a one-week fellowship program is an intensive, hands-on workshop that puts reporters in the field every morning and in the lab each afternoon with
scientists, graduate students, and policy experts.
The program, which coincides with our Annual Public Lecture Series,
includes a public lecture or panel discussion each day and an informal
lecture and discussion by leading writers and researchers at night.
The fellowship program examines the connection between public policy and scientific research, fosters communication between scientists and journalists, and describes
the process of scientific inquiry. Discussions range from disagreement
within the scientific community, scientific uncertainty, and how to
interpret statistics, to how to decipher good science from bad.
Fellowships are available to print, broadcast and electronic journalists
who are interested in marine and environmental science reporting. Each
fellowship provides room, board, and tuition to attend the program
workshop (Sunday-Friday) at University of Rhode Island's Graduate
School of Oceanography and includes limited compensation
for travel.
