Codium fragile sp. tomentosoides

"Oyster thief", "green fleece", "Sputnik weed", "dead man's fingers"

This Chlorophyte is not native to Narragansett Bay. Its appearance in New England waters coincided with the launch of the world's first artificial satellites, Sputnik I and II, by the Soviet Union in 1957. Thus it acquired the common name "Sputnik weed." The thallus of this alga is spongy and cylindrical with dichotomous branching.
