Fucus sp.

"Rock weed"

This genus of the class Phaeophyceae (the brown algae) includes several members which are found in Narragansett Bay. The photograph seen here was recorded at low tide when the fucoids are left to endure the hot sun without the protection of surrounding seawater. Located in the upper intertidal, members of this genus are adapted to endure hot dry periods such as these. Except for the tips of some branches, the thallus of this alga is flattened with a notable midrib. Branching is dichotomous and on the tips of branches are swollen receptacles.
