Palmaria palmata

This parenchymatous Rhodophyte can be quite variable. Generally, the thallus is pink, red, or reddish brown with broad, thick elongated lobes. This alga is distinguished from the sometimes similar looking invasive species Grateloupia doryphora by observation of a cross-section throught the thallus. In this cross-section we can see the the medula is filled with large roundish cells. In Grateloupia, the medula contains filamentous cells. Palmaria is used as a food called dulse, which is used in certain types of soups and stews.
