UI Web Developer, Deep Carbon Observatory

Oversees and manages UI development, design, and implementation of earth and ocean science-oriented websites for externally-funded engagement and communications research projects, including the Deep Carbon Observatory, carried out by the University of Rhode Island’s Office of Marine Programs (OMP) based at the Graduate School of Oceanography. Collaborates with principal investigators, software engineers, content specialists, and graphic designers to develop user interface (UI) frameworks, platforms, structures, and navigation for research-oriented websites to maximize the user experience (UX) and oversees updates and maintenance of OMP’s websites and servers. Works with graphic designer and video producers on electronic publications, mobile applications, and science displays. Manages web-based components of OMP’s communications and engagement initiatives including formatting science content, video, and images for the Web, and managing and creating reports from Web monitoring, analytics, and metrics.

REQUIRED: A bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, or engineering field, liberal arts, or computer science, digital media, information technology, or a related field, and minimum of two–three years experience in web development dealing with user interface (UI) issues; demonstrated proficiency building and maintaining websites in content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal and WordPress; working knowledge of scripting and mark-up languages such as JavaScript, HTML, XHTML, PHP, ASP, and cascading style sheets (CSS); understanding of user experience (UX) needs; must be organized, possess effective interpersonal and verbal, written, and electronic communication skills, and be able to supervise other professional staff, students, and interns.

PREFERRED: Background in computer graphics and design; experience with basic video editing; experience with mobile application development; working knowledge of SQL and relational database systems; experience with server monitoring, management, and troubleshooting.
